Hawan Daushe

In 2024, my focus for Hawan Daushe was on the Dogarai and their horses, the quiet moments before the parade began. I wanted to capture how they prepared, from brushing and decorating the horses to tightening saddles and adjusting turbans.

Behind the grandeur of the Emir’s procession are these small, steady rituals of care and discipline. Each horse, especially the Emir’s, is treated with deep respect, adorned with colorful fabrics and ornaments that reflect pride and tradition. Through these preparations, I found another side of Hawan Daushe, the calm before the spectacle, where tradition is kept alive through every practiced gesture.

Hawan Daushe

This year I wanted to see Hawan Daushe differently. Instead of focusing only on the parade and horsemen, I spent time watching people go about their day, the kids running around, traders selling snacks, families gathered under the sun.

Hawan Daushe isn’t just about royalty and tradition but about the people who make it alive every year.

Gezawa Mud Pit

In Gezawa, the mud pit is used for preparing building materials, skills passed down through generations. Craftsmen skillfully mix clay, water, and straw by foot, shaping materials that form homes, mosques, and everyday objects. These pits embody the sustainable, earth-centered practices of Hausa culture, where the land itself provides shelter, art, and livelihood.

Minjibir, Kano, 2025

Traditional Hausa Weaving

In Minjibir, a town known for its textile heritage, Hausa weavers continue a centuries-old tradition of hand weaving on wooden looms. The process begins with spinning cotton into thread, which is then dyed, often with indigo or other natural pigments, and woven into narrow strips of cloth. These strips are later stitched together to form garments and household fabrics.

Teli Mining in Lere

In Lere, children can be seen standing knee-deep in muddy water, scooping sand into makeshift pans in search of a metal locally called teli. The material, believed to contain tin and coltan, is collected from the riverbed and sold to local buyers.

Mining in this area is largely informal and done by hand, often involving families who depend on it for their livelihood. A bag of teli sells for between ₦2,000 and ₦3,000, depending on quality and weight. For many households, this work is one of the few available sources of income.

While the activity sustains daily life, it also highlights broader issues of child labor, environmental degradation, and economic inequality in mining communities across northern Nigeria.

Moments that stop you mid-step are already lining up.

I'm out here collecting moments, the kind that pull you out of autopilot and demand a pause. New images are brewing—stories from roads I'm still walking and curiosities I'm still chasing down. I shoot what tugs at me, what won't let go until I've looked at it properly.
